Talex operates via a system of satellites in orbit around the Earth. The signals from the GPS satellite can be used to pinpoint a position anywhere on the Earth's surface to a very high accuracy (+/–5m). Talex can also work out its speed and direction of travel, its height above sea level, as well as the time and the date.

The Talex unit can store around 150,000 positions in its database. These can be divided into different data sets, to distinguish between such positions as fixed speed cameras, possible mobile camera positions, red light cameras, schools, and accident black–spots. The Talex also alerts the driver to a fixed or possible mobile camera site, and give him/her the speed limit at that site.
